More than just counselling

Mental Health

Kerry Stott is a multiple award winning qualified mental health nurse. She has won accolades in excellence in nursing and teaching students. Her passion is listening to people and helping them understand their experiences and reactions to it. With over 20 years clinical experience working with trauma, PTSD, cPTSD, and complex mental health conditions. She is trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focussed Therapy with years of clinical experience using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focussed techniques. Her clinical work has led her to be actively researching shame for the last 6 years, which is at the root of many mental health conditions and challenges.

Her approach is very practical, down to earth, and approachable. She believes that everything should be understandable and accessible to everyone.

If you have gotten this far, please note that she also has a wicked sense of humour and a vast array of dad jokes and puns, which she finds hilarious.

Neurodiversity and co-occurring conditions

Kerry does not currently offer diagnostic services for neurodiversity but she does offer guidance and advice to navigate being newly diagnosed. Diagnosis often hits differently and harder if you are late diagnosed (over the age of 18). Understanding the loss and grief that occurs initially, whilst also understanding and managing skills regression, sensory sensitivities, and unmasking.

Frequently, trying to work out what has happened to your life after you have been diagnosed is difficult to say the least. Sensory sensitives that you were not aware of suddenly appear, ways in which you used to cope don’t work, and suddenly the wheels have dropped off. Kerry is there to support you and help you navigate this very tricky time. Hospital passports, sensory profiles, and support with work are all available.

Neurodiversity is not just a ‘mind’ condition, it frequently occurs with a bendy body that has a tendency to break. Co-occurring conditions such as (but not limited to) hypermobility, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), fatigue, brain fog, menopause, perimenopause, and painful periods. As these conditions affect women more than men, research and medical understanding of them can be lagging. This can, and does, lead to people feeling dismissed, minimised, gas lit, and feeling utterly unheard. Kerry is able to help you with her training and experience in mental and physical health combine to support you more holistically than counselling alone.

Art therapy and the outdoors

Kerry is aware that people do not always automatically open up, talking to a stranger can be hard. She employs a wider range of techniques including using art to help you express yourself, calm your brain and body, and interact with the world more mindfully.

She utilises the outdoors as a way to help with communication which can be very helpful if you struggle to sit down or concentrate. This is only available for face to face sessions.
